Shout out to Santana and the whole Truthseekers crew. Mixed and recorded live (no edits, no over-dubs, no pro-tools, recorded in one take) by dj dAz for Sounds Of Umoja productions. The music in this mix has been rolling around in my head for many months, even years, and possibly decades. The ability to understand the similarities between jazz of the past and modern hip hop has always been something to drive my art. Even in my early days as a young yout’, jazz music was always playing in my house, classic movies were always on the t.v., and whenever I’d get home from school, there would always be an energy of welcomeness and calm like you had arrived. As I grew up and started to become influenced by hip hop in the eighties and nineties it just became a natural progression to be influenced by the very hip hop artists that used samples from their pop’s record collection for their own sound. Dad listened to Oscar Peterson, I listened to A Tribe Called Quest. Dad listened to Cab Calloway, I listened to Big Daddy Kane. So, with that being said; Big Up Pop’s, Mom’s, and family. I dedicate this to everyone, but my influences for this mix comes from the movies “The Jungle Book”, and Bob Hope and Bing Crosby’s “Road To Zanzibar”, as well as the very artists who are featured in this mix. Bless Up!

What’s to be said about this life we live other than if you work hard and treat people right, it’ll pay off in ways one could never imagine. About 15 years ago I recorded my first ever mix tape (yes, cassette) of rare groove songs called “The Stoned Soul Picnic”. I loved it, people loved, and even DJ’s like “Little” Louie Vega ad Kenny Dope from Masters @ Work and singer Macy Gray gave me props for it. I don’t have that cassette or even that mix anymore. I can tell you that if I was to record that mix again, it’d sound a lot like this mix you are hearing, except for my skills got a little better since then. Dedicating this mix to all the little people in my life… My nephew’s Finn and Charlie Blackburn, My God-daughter Tiger Mollison, James, Jules, Magritte, Zowen, Henry, Francis, Jack, Christian, Buster, Eleven, Zuriel, Genesis, & Naserith.

Lonnie Liston Smith – Expansions 9. Norman Conners – Mother Of The Future 10. Donald Byrd – Cristo Redentor Recorded and mixed live by dj dAz for Acid Daz productions. Being a follower and lover of music I always find the music that inspires me is the music that goes deeper into the soul, music that has a bigger sound and a conscious message behind it, created by people who choose to push their limits further and display the very talents that brings them back 360˚ to the understanding that we are human. It just so happens some of them can sing better than us. Lot’s of strong vocals on here and some great rhythms too. I know this is probably not the trendiest mix I ever done but these songs have been in the back of my mind for many years and yet there are still recognizable hip hop samples as used by J Dilla, The Pharcyde, ATCQ, and Stetsasonic. Peace and blessings!

dj dAz presents: The Good Groove (RE-RECORD) OK. So I had to re-record this podcast to give it the best possible mix start to finish just to give the music it's proper due, so here it is: Eighties Ladies – Turned Onto You Keni Burke – Risin’ To The Top Dennis Edwards – Don’t Look Any Further The Gap Band – Outstanding Loose Ends – Hangin’ On A String Fatback – I Found Lovin’ Skipworth & Turner – Thinking About Your Love Teena Marie – I Need Your Lovin’ Alicia Myers – I Want To Thank You Positive Force – We Got The Funk Roy Ayers Ubiquity – Running Away Royal Cash – Radio Activity (Instrumental) Loose Joints – Is It All Over My Face Gil Scott-Heron – The Bottle Joyce Sims – All & AllThis mix takes me back to a time when growing up in the U.K. in the eighties, at the time when I was around 15 years old, we would roll out to this under 18 dance club called “The Hop” in Walton-Upon-Thames. What you hear in this mix was pretty much what they’d play at this club. We’d rock our Kangols and Public Enemy t-shirts and go dancing with the females from around the way. Funnily enough although it was a suburban spot on the outskirts of London, there was nuff ruffneck violence going on outside where somebody would most likely catch a punch to the face if you weren’t known to be from around the town. We got chased out of there quite a few times but I think that’s what made the club so live. Good music with an element of danger. So with that being said: Shout out to my Cobham family who I used to roll with on the bus to “The Hop” every week. Large up! Rest in Love to Teena Marie. Big Up Cognito @ Frolab.com and Asad at Footlong Developments. The photo of me was taken in a session opening up for DJ Spinna/J Rocc's "Flavors" in Los Angeles i December 2010. As always, shout out to the Umoja Hi Fi posse for the inspiration, information.
